Saturday night, September 12, 2026 ... Roadrunner .... Boston, MA .... Charles Wesley Godwin and the Allegheny High and Lily Fitts as the opener, what's more to say? Well, I am going to try.
If you have never read any of my older reviews or listened to the podcast before, you're going to either laugh or cry by the end of this. I am not a writer or a wordsmith to save my life. Not even close. The way I write and review, is the same way I would explain it to you if you were sitting here with me in real life. So if it comes across like I am explaining this and having a stroke at the same time, then you get the idea!
Now that the explanation to this mess is out of the way, let's see what we can get out of this ole brain of mine.
If you've never been to the Roadrunner in Boston, okay, it's Brighton, but who's keeping score. If you've never been there and you're local or even looking to see a show in a new city, this is the premier venue in the Commonwealth. Hell, maybe even in all of New England. No, they don't pay me to say that, but they are more than welcome to write the check, just email our management team at, joet@themidnightmile.com ... I am shameless, what can I say, but legit, if you're reading this and want to contribute to the cause here .... that's the guy you want to talk too.
OK, I super digress, I gave you fair warning in the beginning that this would happen. But, indeed Roadrunner is the best venue I think to see a show. From the staff, to the sound, to everything in between, the place is just a real joy to go to. It has become a favorite, as I mentioned, and at this point, I feel like most shows we see are there.
Anyway ... how about the show?
Lily Fitts, who is apparently a Boston girl, started the show. I say 'apparently' because we don't dig into the openers too deep if we don't know them so we can get a sense of who they are as they play their show. The same as if we were to have someone on the podcast, no previous research is done on the guest, because it doesn't make it authentic, at least I don't think so.
But Lily was the perfect opener for this evening and this tour. She hit the stage at 8pm sharp and she played about 45 mins or so and she won me over with the way she structured her set and honestly MOST openers and Direct Support should take some pointers from Miss Fitts.
This woman took to the stage and played 1, yes only 1, cover song and it was 'Jolene' and if I need to tell you who sings that one, then this review isn't for you anyway. It was the 4th song of the set and the rest were original tunes that really did kick all the ass. She has a wonderful voice and man oh man can she tell a story. Her band consists of herself, a drummer and a guitar player. Lily, I apologize, I didn't take notes on their names, but they were the perfect backing to her acoustic picking and vocals.
I feel like I need to explain the cover song comment. If you know me, or don't, I can not stand when artists with original music that is great, puts multiple covers in their sets. Yes, I know there's reason and logistics in why artists do covers, I have been in this a long time now, I get it. I just can't stand it. If you have original music that people want to hear, please for the love of God ... play it. Believe in your stuff. If management or higher ups tell you to put covers in and not play your own stuff, fire them immediately. You don't need that negativity. People want to hear your stuff, trust me.
See there I go again, digressing.
After a solid ass Lily Fitts set, it was time for why we came out on a Saturday night in September.
Charles Wesley Godwin and the Allegheny High.
Now, I know they aren't billed that way, but I have a HUGE soft spot for those Allegheny High boys, because we have had the absolute pleasure of having them on the Podcast, way back when. You can hear that episode here:

Again, shameless plug, but go check it out, it was a really incredible conversation, and our chats have only gotten better since then, so if the CWG team is reading this, or at least for some reason gotten this far, our calendar is open. I know it's not Rogan, but hey, we won an award once and we're like the 8th ranked podcast for music interview podcasts. Just saying.
Where was I? Oh yeah CWG, coming out and just absolutely kicking ass.
I have seen Charles now, I want to say, 4 or 5 times. And honestly this show was different from the others. Not in a bad way. People hear different and automatically think negative. This show was the least "rowdy" of the bunch I have seen. I have thought about it a lot since Saturday and I think it's because we have a new wave of CWG.
This new album 'Christian Name' just has a different feel. It's hard to explain or put into words, because as I mentioned, I am no where near a wordsmith, but this album is certainly a labor of love. Every song is smart, they have a lot to say and although that is just how he writes songs, it feels different. Again, awful with words, but I think you know where I am going with this, especially if you've heard the album.
We luckily got to hear some of the staples off the album, 7 of which found themselves on the set list. This was a show that really ebbed and flowed well with the song choices. I don't remember a Charles show ebbing and flowing this well before. They all have had banger after banger, but there was some care taken here with picking the songs for this tour. Overall the setlist was well done.
Now, we wouldn't be us, if we didn't hold the feet to the fire. We have to talk about some GLARING oversights in the set list and some songs that just didn't make the cut this time around. We're talking about, 'Jesse', 'Shrinks and Pills', 'Miner Imperfections', 'The Flood', 'Strong', and 'Jamie' just to name a few here. Ya know what, now that I say it and think about those songs, they wouldn't have fit the flow of the show that was presented. So, I will give a pass here, but still staples I want to see every time. That's all.
Charles Wesley Godwin and the Allegheny High is never a show that will be missed by us here at the podcast and shouldn't be missed by anyone ever.
I want to give a huge shout out to our friends over at the Roadrunner and Bowery Boston for having us out to the show and letting us do some great ticket giveaways. A huge thank you to CWG's team for hooking us up with a photo pass for the night. We are posting those pics below. We hope you enjoy them. And we will post the setlist as well below.
Thank you for taking a few minutes to read this and keep an eye out for more stuff like this coming up!
Cheers -
Jim
